On this week’s ICC Cricket World, Sri Lanka top-order batsman Mahela Jayawardena talks about his side’s chances in its opening game against Sri Lanka on 30 April in Guyana.

The 32-year-old also comments on why he is looking forward to returning to the Caribbean for the tournament that starts in eight days in Guyana.

“The Caribbean is always a good place for us. In 2007, we reached the World Cup final. So, we’ve always enjoyed our time there and hopefully we can have a good outing there this time round as well,” he says.

Sri Lanka also reached the final of the ICC World Twenty20 2009, in England, but Jayawardena cautions against complacency this time around.

“We did have great success in England but I don’t think we should get ahead of ourselves. This tournament is going to be another tough challenge and we need to start anew, take each game as it comes but try to go one better and win the tournament.

“I think we’ve got a really good, young and talented group of players. I think if we can get everyone together and perform, our chances are pretty good,” he says.

The Cricket World Podcast can be used in whole or part by radio stations that want cricket content, while the public can also download it straight from the ICC website at http://icc-cricket.yahoo.net/media_interactive_zone/podcast.php.

Also on this week’s show, West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) President, Dr. Julian Hunte talks about how preparations are going ahead of the tournament which starts next week.

“We’re very excited about the tournament starting next week, we’ve worked extremely hard and I sincerely hope everyone will enjoy their time in the Caribbean,” says Hunte.

Alongside these interviews, Ireland wicketkeeper Niall O’Brien talks about his hopes for the Associate side that has qualified for its second ICC World Twenty20.

O’Brien says: “Once again we’re the underdogs against two so-called stronger teams and we’ve got two great games to play against them. Hopefully we can cause another big upset in the tournament.”

In addition to the above interviews, this week’s ICC Cricket World also includes a round-up of the last seven days in cricket and an update on the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings.

The weekly ICC Cricket World audio show runs for 15 minutes and has been put together by the ICC’s global broadcast partner ESPN STAR Sports.
